This temple is just in the north of Yogya in the village of Gondongcatur.
It is about a small bouddhistic temple of square plan, illustrated with sculptures of Buddha sitting, in the niches of the roof, and of Bodhisattva upright in the niches of the body of the building.
One sees there also other
sculptures as of Kala Makara, and of the heads of characters with
crushed nose, thick mouth, and long perforated and distended
ears. In addition, a Ganesha was oddly
enchased in a niche.
Candi Maguwo :
There remain nothing any more of candi
Maguwo except, in the court of a public building, this patched up
Nandin, which perhaps belonged to this sanctuary.
This site is situated to approximately
3 km in the western north of the precedent. Well released and arranged, one
sees there the bases of three small shivaist temples.
A
few kilometers in the south of candi Wihara, close to Baturetno, in
the hamlet of Gilang, one can see an enormous block of absolutely splendid stone.
With a surface of approximately 2 m X 1,5 m for an approximate height of 1 m,
this block is superbly decorated on its four sides with beautiful edgings, worked
pilasters, and badges (two by faces) in which are carved animals, all differents.
One is a little astonished to find, abandoned in this lost village, this colossal stone, single remainder of an ancient world.
Candi Gembirowati:
If, passing to Yogya, you will make a round with the beach of Parangtritis, if there is no goddess of the South Seas - Niai Roro Kidul - to see, you can reach the Candi Gembirowati, beautifully located on a hill in the hamlet of Watugajah, village of Girijati, to 3,5 km of Parangtritis, above the hotel "Queen of the South".
Two large stone terraces (actually, there are three of them, but the first
was not released) which strangelly point out very old megalithic terrace that
one finds in Java, and which also point out Marae of Polynesia. But these
are very recent since they would be dated from 16th century, i.e. from the time
of the construction of Candi Sukuh and Cetho (see these names on this
internet site).
One reaches the monument after having crossed a long esplanade, which covers
the hidden terrace and one reaches finally the first terrace of the monument
by a staircase of eight steps. This terrace is 20 m long and 3 m wide and 2,60
m above the esplanade. The last terrace located at 1,45 m above the preceding
one is reached with an another staircase, of six steps. The decoration of the
walls consists of pillars and large escutcheons with simple geometrical forms.
The surrounding landscape is sublime. On the other hand, the last 500 meters of the road are calamitous.
It is one of the ignored inner wall curiosity of Yogyakarta . Located
at the northern end of Jalan Gedongkuning, one can see a splendid Padmasana
or throne of the lotus. A tortoise carries the universe, surrounded by the
Naga snakes . It is about a recent construction by the balinaise
of the district.
